Why should small states get disproportionate representation in the Senate?

Question by Adam H: Why should small states get disproportionate representation in the Senate?

Wyoming (population: 544,270) receives 2 Senators; my state, New York (population: 19.5 million) also is entitled to elect 2 Senators.

This is insanity in its purest form, and along with the Electoral College, one of the ways in which large, urban states are effectively disenfranchised in our system. Why shouldn't we have a unicameral legislature, with each state sending a number of representatives proportionate to its population?
