Circumstances have prevented this Narrative from being offered to the public so early as could have been wished. But we trust that our readers will acquit us of any unnecessary delay, when they consider the magnitude and the number of the events we have attempted to record (which come down, we may observe, to so recent a date as the 23d of September). It has been observed that Time is the deceitful flatterer of Falsehood, but the tried and final friend of Truth : -- If we have trespassed somewhat on the patience of the public, it has been solely with a view of presenting them with a more authentic and circumstantial detail of the facts, than could have been accomplished had we contented ourselves, on all occasions, with the immediate statements of the actors in the scene. To avail ourselves of all that was confirmed, to disembarrass ourselves of what was contradictory, to lower the tone of colouring produced by the excitement of the moment, and to sift, with somewhat of severity, the impas sioned descriptions of...
